After a very exciting and snowy start to the day with all taxis, trains, and tubes cancelled – getting to Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End was more than a challenge! Incredibly all the dancers got to the coach after miles of walking on ice, sitting in standstill traffic and tackling lots of snow. It was all worth it in the end as the dancers had the privilege to dance on a West End stage at Her Majesty’s theatre treading the boards where many famous names have trodden before. It was the most amazing day and a lifetime experience for us all that we shall never forget.

A successful day amid very strong competition at Sadlers Wells in November, well done to all who took part. Results as follows:

Lower Junior Award: Lucy Butler

Junior Mabel Ryan: Vacani Winner Daisy Cohen

Imogen Pohl, Annabelle Davey

On Sunday 5 November a few of our pupils went up to Kings Cross to the Children’s Performance Awards.

The day comprised of two sections.  The first was ‘Let’s make a competition’, where the younger children spent the day learning some short sequences, then performed them in front of the theatre audience without an adjudication.  The idea was to prepare them for competitions in the future.  Lily Hawes, Calvin Jagdev, Eady Parmenter and Isabel Sear all took part and performed beautifully.

The second part of the afternoon was the Children’s Award.  Here the dancers performed sequences and a dance that they had previously learnt in front of the theatre audience.  Hermionie Hallett, Alexis Jagdev and Heidi Sear took part and did themselves proud.

Congratulations to Hermionie Hallett and Heidi Sear who received Commendations and to all who took part.

On Sunday 22nd October of our students competed at the Classical Greek Ruby Ginner Awards in Sussex. All competitors had to participate in a demanding class on the stage in front of a full audience. Our pupils all did us proud and danced so well. The most inspirational moment was to see them all look so happy and really enjoy their experience on the stage. It is a huge achievement to be able to pick up complicated sequences, put expression and the required quality into all their steps as well as present such a high standard of technique.

Our results are as follows:

Phoebe and Scarlett gaining a Commendation. Scarlett also won the Biddy Pinchard Cup for being the most Dramatic Dancer in the morning classes.

This is the most prestigious award that can be given in Classical Greek  and we are proud to say that Sonia has been awarded this for the second time and Juliet was also presented this award in 2009. BHW dancers put on a great show this year at Her Majesty’s Theatre as part of ‘Mardis Gras’. Annabelle McEwen was excited to take part… “The day I did Mardi-Gras I was literally jumping for joy! Performing on the stage at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End of London, you can see everyone looking back at you and it is quite nerve-racking. But when I started to perform, I came alive and it was definitely one of the best days of my life. It isn’t just on stage that the fun happens, it is also backstage, being with your friends and the atmosphere of getting changed into your costumes and worrying about the performance. Sometimes you worry about things like ‘Am I going to get changed quickly enough?’, but it is always OK because all the girls look out for each other. Also, if you are a younger one then then you have an older buddy to look after you and help you to get changed. I loved Mardi-Gras and I think everyone else that took part loved it too! It was a definitely worth all the hard work! If I got asked to do it again, I would say yes instantly.” More photos available to view–woodford-school-of-dance/ BHW_HM141214_22 BHW_HM141214_18crop FRED JOHNSON Huge congratulations must be given to Fred Johnson who has successfully auditioned and been given the role as the 3rd Hedgehog with the Royal Ballet in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for 2015.
